Do I need terms of service on my website? Checker and what to include

If people sign up, pay or rely on your service, terms set out the deal: what you provide, what they can't do, refunds and how the account ends. ShipPatrol looks for them.

Why it matters

Terms aren't a privacy requirement, but consumer law in the UK and the EU requires certain information before someone buys, such as who you are, the total price and their cancellation rights. Terms are where most sites put it. Without them, a dispute is decided on whatever you said in a support email.

How Patch checks

We look for links with words like "terms", "conditions" or "AGB" across the pages we crawl and try common paths like /terms. We only raise this if your site has accounts or sells something.

How to fix it

  1. Publish terms covering accounts, payments, refunds, cancellation, acceptable use and liability.
  2. Include your business name and contact address.
  3. Link them in the footer and at signup or checkout.

Your own report goes further: it names the exact pages, services and settings Patch found on your site, and with a full report you get a fix prompt to paste into Lovable, Bolt or Cursor.

Where this applies

The pre-contract information rules apply to sales to consumers in the EU and the UK.
